Because this cake is for a 'split' birthday for two great friends I thought that I would give them each a tier of this cake. The top tier turned out great. It was my first time trying the swirly rose flowers, and I will definitely be doing them again! Super easy and very effective! It also helped that I have found a cake recipe that I'm very happy with and I think I have mastered the overly sweet Wilton Buttercream! (and I love it!)
The bottom tier.... well you can see it just as well as I can, and it's not the greatest. The brown gel colouring that I have is apparently a bad brown colour. Kinda looks like a awful spray tan or sweet potato skin. (BLAH). But... thanks to a super supportive friend she said, "the brown makes it look retro." So that is what I will go with.
I tried to cover up the bad spray tan by throwing sprinkles over it...literally throwing sprinkles. (My kitchen is a brown sprinkle mess). FYI - 'side sprinkles' SUCK!! I wouldn't wish them upon anyone. I tried the short but forceful side arm throw technique, I tried the paper towel waterfall cascading the little sprinkles onto the side of the cake, and I tried the 'wet-your-finger-to-pick-up-the-sprinkles-then-gently-squish-them-onto-the-cake' method. All three ways of getting the sprinkles on the cake are terrible and I'm open to any suggestions as to an easier way.
Hope they like it! Happy Birthday!!
